What is TPI?
The TPI Screen examines human movement and how your movement restrictions are affecting your golf swing . It focuses on the movement, strength, and flexibility of the human body in relation to striking a golf ball. This is critical, as a golf swing is a dynamic and engaging movement, stability and body posture in motion which doesn’t always come natural to human beings. By focusing on the mechanics of a proper golf swing and how an individual’s current movement patterns impacts their swing, specific areas of improvement can be targeted to make the most impact for each individual player. Then, by consulting a certified TPI trainer, you can create a program to affect the greatest change with targeted, specific exercises. Because the TPI screen thoroughly examines so many aspects of human movement and how it relates to the golf swing, there may be problem areas identified which were not even considered beforehand.
Why TPI is important
If a golfer cannot touch his toes, the golfer is 6x as likely to early extend hips on the downswing. This is the highest association and percentage between a physical dysfunction and swing fault at 82% for touching toes and early extension. A golfer that cannot single leg bridge on the right side has a 6x more likely chance to lose posture during the golf swing. In other words you have a 68% chance of losing your posture if you cannot bridge on the right. A golfer that cannot single leg bridge on the right side will also extend hips 5x more likely than somebody who can. This is a 72% chance that you will early extend.
TPI Level 1 Certification
Understanding how a golfer moves is a prerequisite for effective coaching, training and treatment. Rather than guess what they do, we believe you should assess what they do.
TPI Level 1 Certification teaches golf, fitness and medical professionals how to evaluate a golfer for physical limitations which can inhibit swing efficiency, durability and, ultimately, enjoyment of the game. Students learn to quickly evaluate a player’s physical capabilities using the TPI Level 1 screen and to understand how the results of that assessment are correlated with the technical elements in the player’s swing. This helps a coach, trainer, or medical therapist to quickly identify the key area that can be holding a golfer back from playing their best. We call this the Body-Swing Connection.

BUTCH HARMON
One time at Winged Foot, where Dad was the pro, a guy showed up and said he wanted to copy Sam Snead’s swing. Dad said, “OK, let’s go to the putting green.”
“No, I want to swing like Snead, not putt like him,” the guy said.
“I understand,” Dad said as he dropped a ball into one of the cups on the green. “Now, can you pick that ball out of the hole without bending your knees?”
“No.”
“Well, Sam Snead can, so let’s forget about what he does and start working on what you can do.”
